What is your personal brand?

The concept of brand has been around for decades.  When we think of brands we think of iconic names such as Coca Cola, Apple and Nike. How a company defines and builds their brand is directly tied to its reputation and success. Our brand experience drives what we buy.

Have you ever thought of your personal brand? How do people perceive you?  The idea of personal brand is simple.  Whether at work, among your peer group or on the Internet you're creating a personal brand.  Like a corporation, a successful personal brand has to be developed, maintained and cultivated. This brand is built over time, but like many unfortunate companies or individuals, can be lost very quickly.  How do you built a dependable brand?

1. Honesty:  Good, old fashioned honesty. Be open and transparent.  If you're honest and direct you'll create value as an effective and respected feedback source.
2. "Can Do" attitude: No obstacle is too large, you can overcome anything. Internalize frustration, be known for optimism.
3. Work Ethic: Work ethic is everything.  No one dislikes a hard worker.  Be consistent in effort and show humility.
4. Be Consistent: People respect someone they can rely on, whether its your spouse, boss or close friend.
5. Be Open and Cheerful: Remember to smile even if there's a storm brewing inside, and not a fake smile, but a genuine, real smile. As Guy Kawasaki likes to say, "use the eye muscles."
6. Confidence:  Have an air of confidence at all times, even if its just on the outside.
7. Be Productive: Hit the numbers.  Finish the project.  If the boss wants it by Thursday, hand it in by noon on Wednesday.
8. Step Up:  Be the guy that volunteers.  Don't be afraid of opportunities that may scare you.  Don't be risk averse.

A strong brand is hard earned but in reality is a perception.  Be aware of how people perceive you.  People don't like complainers, they like problem solvers.
